"Gene silencing" in transgenic plants
This is a phenomenon where the expression of an inserted foreign gene becomes unintentionally suppressed. Nevertheless scientific data indicate that an inserted foreign gene may switch off an
endogenous gene (endogenous gene = a gene which was already in the plant before the genetic modification was introduced). This phenomenon has been reported also in animals (Drosophila). References:

Introduction to the tool "Design Structure Matrix (DSM)".
"The Design Structure Matrix (DSM) differs from conventional project-management tools in that it focuses on representing information flows rather than work flow. Thus, it is better able to depict the
key dynamic of innovation processes." (from: "Innovation at the Speed of Information" by Steven D. Eppinger (2001), Harvard Business Review, January, 149 - 158.

Obit by Pier Carlo Montecucchi
Vincenzo Montecucchi, General, the Carabinieri Corps, received many honors during his life time,
including threee War Cross for Military Valour (World War II, period 1940 - 1943), one Gold Cross of Merit and one Gold Medal for Merit , two honourable mentions, a particular mention from
the R. Government of Albania (World War II, 1940), a Mention in Dispatches (Legione Territoriale Carabinieri, Torino, October 2, 1964), the title of "Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica
Italiana", the title of "Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana", the title of "Console Militare del Touring Club Italiano". He was prisoner in Germany (1944). He offered a great
contribution during the period of Resistenza in Cuneo and in its suburbs. He died April 17, 2001, in Carmagnola (Italy).
My father has been an excellent and unique spiritual and physical teacher for me and I like to report here the same words used by G. Hamel in a dedication to his father:
" There is no one who has taught me more. There is no one I hold in higher regard. It is my greatest fortune to be his son."

Biometric security systems and personal privacy
The available technologies (including: fingerprint readers, retinal scanners, facial- recognition cameras, voice-recognition) are discussed with reference to the recent paper "Bio-Keys" by Sally Wiener Grotta (2001), PC Magazine
(June 12, pages 162 - 174). See the table "Biometropolis" in the section At present, the combination of "bio-keys" with smart cards and passwords represent the best solution for personal identification., with the respect of the individual privacy.
A survey on the collaboration between Industry and University in Italy A discussion has been organized about the situation on the collaboration between Industry and
University in Italy starting from the document: "Working together, creating knowledge: the university - industry research collaborative initiative". This report was published June 11, by the
Business - Higher Education Forum (American Council on Education) and it is available on the 'net at the web page The comments published at this regard on the magazine Nature (411, 723 and 728, 2001) have been taken into consideration.
Biodetectors: Some considerations on biometrics ("Biometropolis" on Security and Intrusion 2002
) A biometric is a measurement of a biological characteristic. Biometrics represent forms of authentication "Biometric security systems grant—or deny—access to buildings, information and benefits by
automatically verifying the identity of people through their distinctive physical or behavioral traits (from: MSNB: "5 ways to make America safer" - October 28 at www.msnb.com ). Once
"captured," a biometric is translated algorithmically into a complex string of numbers and stored in a database as a template. Later, this template can be compared to any "live" biometric presented as proof of identity."
Biometric systems::
Other biometric systems:
Biometric systems are employed for two main purposes: identification ( = "who is this person ") : the identity of a subject is determined by comparing a measured biometric against a dastabase of stored records; a one-to-many comparison of an individual's submitted biometric sample against the entire database of biometric reference templates to determine whether it matches any of the templates and, if so, the identity of the enrollee whose template was matched. The one-to-many approach is seeking to find an identity within a database, rather than verify a claimed identity; verification ( = "is this person who he claims to be?") : the verification compares a measured biometric with one known to come from a particular person; it is a comparison of two sets of biometrics to determine if they are from the same individual; it is a one-to-one comparison of a live finger and a previously enrolled record to ensure that the applicant is who he / she claims to be. Different biometrics are used for different kinds of security check Amsterdam Airport (E.U.) installs Eye-Scanny Security System Logan International Airport (Boston, MA, U.S.A.) is using Facial Recognition (from: The International Herald Tribune (The IHT ONLINE at www.iht.com) Facial recognition will be used soon in Arizona, California, Coloradou References:

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - called also "post-traumatic stress syndrome" (or "shell shock" or "battle fatigue") was first recognized during World War I. Tratment can be individual tailored ("The Last Coyote" by Michael Connelly, 1995).
